KARATE is a traditional Okinawan martial art. Karate (literally "Empty Hand") training teaches a wide range of effective strikes and kicks as well as traditional Karate weapons.

Our Karate for Kids Program teaches kids how to stand their ground when necessary.
It builds confidence and courage along with discipline and good manners.

Does it involving fighting? Since it's always better to avoid a fight in real life we teach highly effective self defense skills for a scenario that, hopefully, will never happen. But students will be well practiced if the situation required it. Karate students may be encouraged to participate in controlled competitions to further enhance their character and safe application or their skill.

AIKIDO
Aikido ("The Way of Harmony") is an ethical and highly effective self defense system for anyone and any profession. Techniques do not require size or strength. There is no fighting and there are no contests, competitions or tournaments. It is dynamic and magical to see and even more rewarding to practice. Its techniques blend with an attack and redirect it into a throw or pin using circular principles of absorption and redirection.
It emphasizes appropriate response and de-escalaton but can be seriously decisive if needed.

All Aikido techniques can be applied as throws and projections but also as come-alongs to neutralize an opponent and/or pins to contain, restrain or arrest in the case case of police and any law enforcement and security officers. With this in mind, the main skills gained by students are increased awareness of one's self and one's surrounding as well as effective evasion and escape skills. Followed by the full application of any Aikido techniques when warranted.

Does it involving fighting? No. In traditional Aikido there are no competitions, tournaments or contests in traditional Aikido. Competitions have strict rules and are always against only one opponent. In Aikido training we have to be aware of all of the opponents capabilities - can they bite, kick? produce a weapon? be joined by other attackers? In Aikido we train to handle all of these scenarios. All while actually teven aking care of our partner (opponent) for both safety and de-escalation options.

QIGONG is a traditional Chinese practice that combines physical movements, breathing techniques, and meditation. It aims to improve physical and mental well-being by cultivating and balancing the body's "qi" (energy). Movements are slow, gentle, and often repetitive that focus on posture, balance, and flexibility. Breathing Techniques are deep and rhythmic that coordinate with movements. Meditation to cultivating a calm and focused state of mind. Qigong aims to integrate the mind, body, and spirit.

TAI CHI is a system of exercise and movement developed long ago as a martial or training art that is now widely used for health and wellness. It can be practiced by almost anyone and in almost any situation.

Often known as “moving meditation”, tai chi is a series of slow, gentle motions that are patterned after movements in nature. Most of the work is performed while standing and taking small steps, though it can be modified for seated practitioners as well.

Tai chi and qi gong are adaptable for nearly all fitness levels, do not require equipment and can be performed anywhere you feel comfortable moving.

Does Qigong or Tai Chi involve any fighting? Not at all. Both involve meditative self defense movements with mindfulness and relaxation as the main goal.

WEAPONS TRAINING

Both our Aikido and Karate training programs offer traditional weapons practice that enhance our both our Aikido and Karate skills.

Aikido weapons training involves the wooden sword (bokken), wooden staff (jo) and knife (tanto).
Karate weapons training involves the long staff (bo), tonfa, scythe and other traditional Okinawan weapons.

IAIDO

laido is the "Way of the Sword". Sincere students are taught proper drawing and handling of the Japanese long sword called a katana. laido is a strictly solo practice of long-established traditional sword forms for developing awareness, precision, posture, balance and power. Practicing laido enhances both Aikido & Karate training. Prospective students should have a basis in proper dojo etiquette and be familiar with basic bokken.

He earned his MA in English Literature and has been a full time teacher of language arts for over 20 years.

Isshinryu karate is an Okinawan form of karate. Its founder, Tatsuo Shimabuku, studied other traditional forms, taking aspects from each to create a style that is an effective system of self-protection.

Shoshin Isshinryu Karate was established by chief instructor William Kadar after having studied Isshinryu since 1982. We at Shoshin Isshinryu Karate strive to maintain the core of Isshinryu's philosophy. "Isshinryu" means "one heart way," and Shimabuku's desire was to promote mental, physical, and spiritual strength, along with self-discipline and confidence. We emphasize the founder's emphasis on Isshinryu's capabilities to peacefully resolve conflicts – a desire to rely on karate's potentially devastating techniques only as a last resort.

We believe, and reinforce, the samurai maxim that "true victory is victory over oneself," and feel that the study of traditional karate is really a study of the self. When a student steps onto the mat for the first time he or she has already identified a desire to change something about himself or herself. The same applies to someone who has been training for years. The term shoshin means "beginner's mind," and we believe that every training session is an opportunity to learn something new about ourselves – whether we have been training for one day or thirty years.
